Earthjustice represents nine groups challenging President Trump's unlawful action: The Wilderness Society, the National Parks Conservation Association, the Sierra Club, the Grand Canyon Trust, Defenders of Wildlife, Great Old Broads for Wilderness, Western Watersheds Project, WildEarth Guardians, and the Center for Biological Diversity. "This case challenges President Donald J. Trump's unlawful December 4, 2017 proclamation that attempts to revoke monument status and protections from roughly half of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (the Monument), which was designated in 1996 pursuant to the Antiquities Act of 1906.

"We the undersigned 121 law professors with expertise in environmental, natural resources, and administrative law, and related fields, submit these comments to express our serious concerns with the process initiated by Executive Order (EO) 13792, which directs the Secretary of the Interior (Secretary) to "review" all national monuments designated or expanded after January 1, 1996, that either include more than 100,000 acres of public lands or for which the Secretary determines inadequate "public outreach and coordination with relevant stakeholders" occurred. The Department of Commerce is conducting a separate review of five Marine Monuments. EO 13792 and the President's public statements upon signing that order reflect profound misunderstandings of both the nature of national monuments and the President's legal authority under the Antiquities Act."
Areas cut out of Utah monuments are rich in oil, coal, uranium

President Trump drastically reduced the size of two national monuments in Utah on Monday, potentially opening about 2 million acres of public land to mineral extraction and other activities in a state in which about 65 percent of all land is federally owned. The sites, Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments, contain rich troves of archaeological and paleontological finds in addition to large deposits of coal, uranium, oil and gas.
